Abstract: The finite element method (FEM) has been widely recognized as an effective means of numerical simulation for nearly half a century. However, there was always controversy over the role of FEM and doubts about the results of finite element calculation. In this paper, application of the finite element method in reinforced soil structure was investigated, and the commonly used simulation methods for the interface between soil and reinforcement were presented. The necessity of using FEM was demonstrated in the design of high reinforced soil slope and the analysis of foundation pit displacement. The feasibility of its application was also discussed in terms of professional education, commercial software development and social awareness. Suggestions on the application of FEM are also presented.
