Features and Comprehensive Countermeasures of Soil and Water Loss in Dongting Lake Area

Abstract:

Dongting Lake area is an important water resource conservation area. It has abundant biological resources and land resources. According to the statistical data in Hunan province and Hubei province and field investigation, we analysed the area, intensity and the likely impact of soil and water loss, summarized the measures of comprehensive management of soil and water loss in Hunan Province and Hubei Province in recent years, and proposed the goals of prevention and control of soil and water loss in Dongting Lake area. Furthermore, according to the regional characteristics and geomorphological features, we divided the Dongting Lake area into two control partitions (hilly area and plain area), and proposed corresponding management approaches for each partition and further calculated the corresponding engineering quantities in accordance with engineering measures and plant measures. Partitioning is very important for the prevention and control of soil and water loss as well as the ecological restoration and sustainable development of Dongting Lake. Meanwhile the soil and water conservation work in the upper and middle reaches of Dongting Lake area should be done well.
