Research Progress and Prospect of Water Ecological Health Assessment in the Yangtze River Basin Based on Bibliometrics and Visual Analysis

In recent years, the problem of water ecological health in the Yangtze River basin has become the research focus in the field of global environmental science. Through the methods of bibliometrics and knowledge mapping, this paper systematically analyzes the relevant research literature on water ecological health assessment in the Yangtze River basin in the Web of Science core collection (WoSCC) database (561 papers) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database (364 papers) from 2000 to 2024. VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were used to analyze the evolution of hot spot clustering and emerging words, the results showed that: ① The research development presents three-stage characteristics, with an average annual number of papers less than 10 in the early stage, and the annual number of papers gradually increases driven by the policy in the medium term. After 2017, the annual number of papers followed by a rapid surge, which is significantly coupled with the implementation of ecological protection policies in the Yangtze River basin; ② WoSCC studies focus on pollution-driven ecological risk mechanisms, while CNKI research prioritizes methodological innovation and bio-integrity threshold diagnosis, representing microscopic mechanisms and macroscopic management approaches respectively. ③ Recent research expands toward multidimensional ecosystem assessment, enabling precise watershed health evaluation and facilitating the fundamental shift in China’s “14th Five-Year Plan” water management objectives toward “aquatic ecosystem health evaluation”. These findings provide scientific foundations for Yangtze River water ecological health research.
