Abstract

Based on numerical analysis in association with load transfer method, the bearing behaviors of large-diameter long pile under inclined loads are studied by using software FLAC3D. It’s found that the bearing behavior of pile in clay is determined by the inclination. When the inclination varies from being smaller than a critical angle to being larger than the critical angle, which is about 20° for the case in this paper, the bearing mode changes from vertical-load dominated to horizontal-load dominated.  Through comparison with previous researches, it’s found that both the inclination factor given by Koumoto and the semi-empirical envelope formula  proposed by Meyerhof can’t estimate the ultimate bearing capacity accurately.
