Abstract:  Slope surface runoff,  as the main cause of water and soil loss, is of critical significance to be regulated and controlled scientifically. The characteristics of runoff regulation and control by planting and mulching Bahia grass on red soil slope are explored by adopting Drainage Lysimeter. It is revealed that the total annual runoff by different treatments varies, and the runoff distribution differs much more remarkably. The area mulched with Bahia grass has the largest total annual runoff, larger than that of the exposed ground surface, followed by that in the area planted with  Bahia grass. The amounts of surface runoff in areas planted and mulched with Bahia grass are substantially smaller than that of the exposed ground surface; while the amounts of groundwater flow are much more than that of the exposed ground surface. The runoff distribution ratio of surface runoff to groundwater runoff in areas planted with Bahia grass, mulched with Bahia grass, and exposed ground surface is respectively 1/51.7, 1/35.5 and 1/1.4.
