Abstract

This review deals with constructed, under-construction, and awaiting construction pumped storage power station in China, and measurement and application of their rock mass initial stress field. Some basic laws of rock mass initial stress field during the design and construction of contemporary pumped storage power station, are preliminarily studied, including as follows: ①high, middle and low in-situ stress levels existing in the measured rock mass initial stress field; ②the general expression coinciding the three principal stresses changes in the region of 100-500m below the earth's surface; ③the relationship between the chamber long axis direction and the geo-stress; ④the equation of the minimum cover thickness of the PSP station; ⑤30%-50% effect on the rock mass initial stress caused by geological fracture.
