Abstract: Stratified high slope with gently inclined bedding is one of the typical bank structures in Three Gorges Reservoir . The main controlling factors of embankment slope stability are engineering geological petrofabric and rock property. An investigation was carried out at 100 high slopes from Yunyang to Jiangjin in Chongqing . To the stratified slopes with gently inclined bedding ,the findings show that there are four failure typical modes in high slopes. They are surface weathering mode, sliding mode under pressure-shear, falling mode of tension-shear and falling mode under tension. According to control theory of rock fissure and in combination with typical modes, the features of each category have been described. In view of the section outline of cliff or steep slope, the features of main control structural plane, the number of dominant plane, joint density, and lithology, the authors found macro-criteria to identify perilous rock in the field. These macro-criteria are checked with 100 modes from Yunyang to Jiangjin and are closely coincident with the real modes.
