Abstract: Sediment particle size parameters are the numerical values that describe the character of particle size distribution, including mean particle size, sorting coefficient/standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis. This paper introduces two methods for calculating particle size distribution parameters, namely, graphic method and moment method. A comparison between the graphic method and moment method is conducted. The results obtained by the two methods show as follows: The mean particle size is almost identical; the sorting coefficient can be replaced one another; the skewness has some comparability, and can be converted each other; no clear correlation is found in kurtosis values, and can not be converted. The simple method which bases upon Mastersizer2000 family of particle characterization instrument is brought forward.
