In 2005, there were 61 800 t of NH3 N, 239 300 t of COD, 187 300 t of TN and 32 400 t of TP discharged from the rural area in Hubei Province, resulting in the discharged amount of major polluted materials from rural places being higher than that from industrial of the whole province. Therefore, each square kilometer of the land in Hubei Province has to bear pollution loading as high as 334 kg of NH3 H, 1 131 kg of COD, 1 011 kg of TN and 175 kg of TP. The features of non-point pollution in rural Hubei are characterized by heavy fishery pollution, dispersive animal cultivation pollution and extensive living pollution.
