Abstract: Using the finite element method, a simulation procedure is developed for analysis of temperature and stress fields of rolled compacted concrete (RCC) dams based on the construction characteristics of RCC dam. The procedure is then applied to analyze the temperature and stress histories of t he Pengshui RCC Gravity Dam for the entire process of construction and operation period of the project. Environmental temperatures changed by atmosphere and reservoir, temperature rised by cement hydration heat and concrete placing temperature are considered in the simulation. Also, the gravity load, the static water pressure, creep effect of the concrete and the variation of Young' modulus due to the age are included in the computation of stress field. Different factors a re also considered in the study including cooling due to construction flood over flow, cold wave attack etc. The conclusions show the surrounding temperature and the placing temperature have significant effects on the temperature and stress fields of the RCC dam. Reasonable construction and temperature control measures are suggested from the results of the study. 
