Abstract

The Three Gorges Project permanent lock is constructed by deeply cutting off the rock mass in mountain. The high and steep rock slopes of both sides were formed. The maximum excavated depth reaches about 170 m.In view of their enormous scale, the slope stability problems attract wide attention in the engineering society. This paper gives a brief review on the problems occurring during the lock evcavation in 6 years, such as the difficulty in keeping the designed configurations of the slopes in blasting, rock cracking, collapse and rock block sliding etc..To solve these problems a serries of investigations and discussions have been conducte and remedial measures adopted.Based on the above mentioned,in this article an overall analysis on the causes and mechanisms of these problems is performed. Some understandings and experience are outlined as referenec for other similar rock projects.
