Abstract: Employing a phenomenological approach consistent wi th continuum mechanics of unsaturated soil,the shear strength behaviors of unsat urated soils in the counties of westnorth of Hubei province and Nanyang of He nan province are explored.The relationships of shear strength of unsaturated soi ls with water content and matrix suction are represented.Some experiences for so lving the application of expansive soils in engineering are obtained.
