Abstract: Distributed optical fiber has been increasingly used in dam (dike) seepage monitoring, but its application is restricted by long heating time and low efficiency. First, the technical requirements of distributed fiber optic cable with heating function are expounded in this paper. Then the quantitative relationship between heating time and other factors, including heating-conductor length, cross-sectional area and resistance, are analyzed. In overall consideration of the material, flexibility, tensile strength, resistivity, optical fiber structure, and insulation of the heating conductor, a special distributed fiber optic cable with heating function was customized with lowest cost and was applied to the leakage monitoring for the first stage project of middle route South-to-North water transfer. The results showed that the customized distributed fiber optic cable meets the heating-requirements, demonstrating good market prospect.
