Abstract

[Objective] Rocky desertification and the massive accumulation of phosphogypsum are significant ecological management challenges in Southwest China. Because the physicochemical properties of phosphogypsum differ greatly from those of modified hydrogels, the characteristics of composite hydrogels modified with phosphogypsum and drinking water sludge and their effects on soil improvement require further investigation. Therefore, this paper integrates the resource utilization of phosphogypsum with the improvement of rocky desertified soil, providing a new technical pathway for the remediation of rocky desertified soils in Southwest China. [Methods] This study prepared four types of hydrogel materials modified with phosphogypsum and drinking water sludge, and determined their water retention, phosphorus slow-release capability, and soil and water conservation characteristics. Simulated soil erosion tests and plant pot experiments were conducted, and the effectiveness of these materials in soil improvement was evaluated by analyzing changes in soil nutrients and the growth conditions of ryegrass. [Results] (1) The water retention performance of the hydrogel significantly improved after modification with phosphogypsum and drinking water sludge. At 25 ℃, the water release time of the modified hydrogel increased to 1.67-1.89 times that of the unmodified hydrogel, the maximum water retention reached 29.29 g/g, and after mixing with soil, the 30-day water loss rate decreased from 99.73% to a minimum of 81.76%. This significantly slowed the evaporation of water in soil. (2) Hydrogels modified with phosphogypsum and drinking water sludge achieved slow phosphorus release, with the cumulative release rate of phosphorus decreasing by 5.65%-17.9% (over 18 days). (3) The soil and water conservation ability of the modified hydrogel significantly improved, with sand reduction rate, flow reduction rate, and water retention increment reaching 33.96%,58.68%, and 46.39 g/kg, respectively. (4) In addition, after adding the modified hydrogel, the organic matter, alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, and cation exchange capacity in the soil increased by up to 52.64%, 87.88%, 1 057.14%, 69.03%, and 84.62%, respectively. The fresh weight of the planted ryegrass reached 4 times that of the control group, and the bud length and root length increased by 38.1% and 4.1 times, respectively. [Conclusion] The modified hydrogel prepared in this paper has good water retention, fertilizer slow-release properties, and soil and water conservation characteristics, as well as soil improvement effects, providing theoretical support for the application of environmentally friendly modified hydrogel materials in soil improvement.

The tendon-bone interface effectively transfers mechanical stress for movement, yet its regeneration presents significant clinical challenges due to its hierarchical structure and composition. Biomimetic strategies that replicate the distinctive characteristics have demonstrated potential for enhancing the healing process. However, there remains a challenge in developing a composite that replicates the nanostructure of the tendon-bone interface and embeds living cells. Here, we engineered a nanoscale biomimetic bilayer hydrogel embedded with tendon stem cells for tendon-bone interface healing. Specifically, the biomimetic hydrogel incorporates intra- and extrafibrillar mineralized collagen fibrils as well as non-mineralized collagen fibrils resembling the tendon-bone interface at the nanoscale. Furthermore, biomimetic mineralization with the presence of cells realizes living tendon-bone-like tissue constructs. In the patella-patellar tendon-interface injury model, the tendon stem cell-laden biomimetic hydrogel promoted tendon-bone interface regeneration, demonstrated by increased fibrocartilage formation, improved motor function, and enhanced biomechanical outcomes. This study highlights the potential of the stem cell-laden biomimetic hydrogel as an effective strategy for tendon-bone interface regeneration, offering a novel approach to engineering complex tissue interfaces.© 2025 The Authors.

The novel hydrogels were synthesized by grafting guar gum with acrylic acid and cross-linking with ethylene glycol di methacrylic acid (EGDMA). The synthesis of hydrogel was confirmed by characterization through C NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, SEM micrography, thermo-gravimetric analysis and water absorption studies under different solutions. Synthesized hydrogel (GG-AA-EGDMA) was confirmed to be biodegradable with half-life period of 77 days through soil burial biodegradation studies. The effects of hydrogel treatment on soil were evaluated by studying various physico-chemical properties of soil like bulk density, porosity, water absorption and retention capacity etc. The hydrogel which could absorb up to 800 ml water per gram, after addition to soil, improved its porosity, moisture absorption and retention capacity significantly. Water holding capacity of water increased up to 54% of its original and porosity also increased up to 9% of its original. The synthesized hydrogel revealed tremendous potential as soil conditioning material for agricultural applications.Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cow dung and wheat straw are rich in lignocellulose, which has a complex structure, making it difficult to biodegrade. This study investigated the promotion of composting effectiveness and product fertility by adding nanobubble water (Air, CO, He, and N) during aerobic composting of cow dung and wheat straw. Nanobubble water prolonged the high-temperature period by 1-2 days, increased the activity of soil urease and soil ligninase, reduced the lignocellulose content by 1.4 %-6.1 %, and increased the total potassium/total phosphorus ratio of the final compost products by 1.8 %-3.5 %/31.6 %-43.0 %. Nanobubble water of N significantly increased the total nitrogen of final compost products by 8.3 %. The lignocellulose content was significantly positively correlated with the moisture content, but significantly negatively correlated with the relative abundances of Georgenia and Marinimicrobium. The final compost products of the nanobubble water groups significantly increased the total biomass of cabbage by 37.1 %-195.3 %. The results showed that adding nanobubble water to aerobic compost of cow dung and wheat straw improved the biodegradation of lignocellulose and enriched the nutrient elements (total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total potassium) of the final compost products. Among the four types of nanobubble water, N-containing nanobubble water is the most promising.Copyright © 2025 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
