Abstract

On the basis of reviewing the previous research results for the permanent use of the Three Gorges reservoir, and analyzing the sedimentation situation since the operation of the Three Gorges reservoir, suggestions about operating mode of sediment discharging were proposed.Operating mode of sediment discharging is important for the operating mode of Three Gorges Reservoir. The purpose of operating mode of sediment discharging is to realize the permanent use of the main usable capacity of Three Gorges reservoir. Its preliminary requirements are to control the loss rate of reservoir usable storage less than 1 000×104 m3 per year before primary equilibrium of the reservoir deposition, and to resist the occurrence of the progressive deposition in the upper and middle reaches of fluctuating backwater region. The adjustment of flood control level in flood season should be in keeping with above requirements.According to the operating mode suggested, usable storage of the Three Gorges reservoir can be permanently used.

Key words

Three Gorges reservoir / deposition in the reservoir / permanent use of reservoir / loss rate per year of reservoir usable storage / regulation of sediment discharging
