    Wudongde Hydropower Station Environment Information System which serves for the hydropower station exploitation is a comprehensive software system for environmental management and decision making. The system can integrate the basic geographical database, environmental database and attributive database on the basis of advanced ArcGIS Engine, Visual Basic, GIS spatial analysis function, environment evaluation modeling method and water quality model. It consists of two parts: querying system and decision making system. Querying system has several functions such as displaying, editing, querying,searching, spatial statistics, and spatial analysis. Decision making system sets the core modules. This paper describes the core modules of the software system in detail, including main researching contents and implementing processes of modules on ecological environmental qualitative evaluation, dynamic monitoring, environmental impact assessment, water pollution emergency prewarning. It is verified by application that this system reaches the design requirements wholly.

    Water Cycle Mechanism in the Source Region of Yangtze River

    Because of special geography and climate environment, the water circulation mechanism in the source of Yangtze River has a distinct characteristic. According to the features of climate, precipitation, glaciers and permafrost in the source region of Yangtze River, the transfer mechanisms among water vapor, solid water and liquid water are analyzed. Results show that despite the lack of rainfall in the source region of Yangtze River, there are huge amounts of solid water storage. Its unique characteristics of water conversion mechanism have constructed a fragile ecological system in the Yangtze River source. Once the water cycle mechanism changes, the ecological environment will be significantly affected.

    According to the recommended watershed division and by means of the Horton method, we preliminarily researched the stream order classification of the Yangtze River (exclusive of the Taihu Lake watershed sub-basin) by properly choosing the minimum stream. Tree diagrams and tables were obtained. Results show that (1) The Yangtze River is recommended to be divided into main channel watershed basin and 8 tributary watershed sub-basins inclusive of Yalong River, Minjiang River, Jialing River, Wujiang River, Dongting Lake, Hanjiang River, Poyang Lake and Taihu Lake. (2) Statistic and regressive analysis of 581 streams of the Yangtze River shows that stream length is about 0.5 power related to watershed area. Streams with watershed area no less than 2 000km 2 or stream length no shorter than 100km are selected as the minimum stream. Thereupon based on the minimum stream, the total number of streams of the Yangtze River is determined to be 374. (3) With Minjiang River watershed sub-basin as an example, tree diagrams and tables of streams for all watershed sub-basins of the Yangtze River are elaborately fabricated. The diagrams and tables illustrate the basic information such as river kinship and affiliation, stream order, basin area, and river length. (4) The highest stream order of the Yangtze River is the 6 th order. In regard to streams, there are 1 or 0.3% 6 th-order stream, 3 or 0.8% 5 th-order streams, 6 or 1.6% 4 th-order streams, 14 or 3.7% 3 rd-order streams and 71 or 19.0% 2 nd-order streams and 279 or 74.6% 1 st-order streams; while in terms of watershed division, sub-basins of Minjiang River, Jialing River and Poyang Lake belong to 5 th-order stream, sub-basins of main channel, Yalong River, Dongting Lake and Hanjiang River belong to 4 th-order stream, and Wujiang River sub-basin belongs to 3 rd-order stream.

    According to statistics, most of the failed dams are earth-dams. In order to more precisely predict the process of dam failure, the resulting flood and its propagation, many dam-failure models have been developed in recent decades. The existing earth-dam failure models are summarized and classified, with special attention paid to the models of earth-dam failure due to overtopping. Meanwhile, simulation of the earth-dam failure caused by piping is briefly introduced as well. On the basis of the current research results, problems in the current dam-failure model are analyzed and summarized in the light of the model assumptions and governing equations. Finally, key points and suggestions are put forward for further research.

    The authors analyzed the model of harmful algal blooms in the river on the basis of classification regression tree (CART) algorithm of data mining. Results indicated that phosphate, chloride and the maximum pH values are key factors of algae generation. Furthermore, we employed the R language to validate the superiority and convenience of using CART algorithm. The conclusions and methods could contribute to a more effective water quality monitoring and forecasting.

    A digital construction management system which integrates computer technology, GIS technology, database technology, and wireless sensor network technology is introduced, and its application to the Dagangshan Hydropower Station is described. Functions inclusive of 3-D visual simulation, construction grouting, concrete temperature control and safe blasting monitoring are elaborated in detail. With this system, a data collection mode which fits the dam construction characteristics is established. Moreover, 3-D visual query, query and analysis of concrete temperature control, as well as process control and quality management for foundation treatment works are also accomplished. Digital system could realize the management and sharing of centralized data, enhance the standardization, refinement and personalization of the construction site, and provide technical support for the decision-making of hydropower construction.

    To analyse the stability of soil slope under seepage, the effects of coupling between seepage and stress fields should be considered.Until now, the stability analysis of the soil slope under seepage is carried ou t through the program developed by the researcher. Usually, the data of seepage are simulated through FEM, then the stability is analysed by the means of slicin g. The analysis and calculation through strength reduction FEM is feasible. More over, the PLAXIS finite element program is suitable to this field. In this paper , the PLAXIS finite element program is adopted to analyse the stability of soil slope under seepage through strength reduction FEM. Then the checking computatio n is conducted through the program of ADINA and GEO - SLOPE.

    The method of synthesizing a non-toxic and water-soluble cross-linker is introduced. This novel cross-linker could replace the ordinary cross-linking agent N’-Methylenebisacrylamide, a material neither easily dissolved nor environmental-friendly, which is commonly used in acrylate grouting. The ingredients of CW520 acrylate chemical grouting material synthesized by this new cross-linker have been determined. Tests on the mechanical properties of slurries and gels indicate that CW520 acrylate grouting material is featured by low viscosity, good fluidity, low osmotic coefficient, and can be injected into tiny cracks with controllable gelling time and high compressive strength of consolidated sand. It’s of great practical value and could be utilized widely.

    Open-source code ELCIRC(Eulerian-Lagrangian CIRCulation) solves the shallow water equations using a semi-implicit Eulerian-Lagrangian finite volume/finite difference method with horizontally unstructured grids and vertically unstretched z-coordinates. ELCIRC source code aside from the governing equation solution is analyzed in this paper. The operation of interpolation,topological structure,definite condition,hierarchy information,and wetting and drying method are described in detail. Backtracking,as the key technology of ELCIRC,is expounded comprehensively. Moreover,some detailed problems are discussed,and a few references and suggestions are given to avoid the errors caused by similar number subtraction and by employing small number as the denominator. ELCIRC has been applied in practice and could serve as a valuable reference for developing hydrodynamic models.

    In order to study flood-damage rules,it is necessary to recognize the history of flood. According to the historical records, the occurrence rules of dry and flood for both Yangtze River and Yellow River were analyzed. Based on the dry and humid changes of climates in recent 1000 years in the Yangtze Basin, the periodic dry-flood variations were discussed and the flood frequencies and disasters from 1840 to present were analyzed, flood characteristics and relieving measure were proposed. The study shows that the probability of simultaneow occurence of flood in the two basins are low but the probability of dry are high; the flood frequency is higher than dry frequency in Yangtze River basin; the flood frequency in Yangtze River is higher than in Yellow River; flood frequency in middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River is higher than that in its upper reach.

    Mann-Kendall test, wavelet analysis and tendency item extraction from moving average series were utilized for the consistency analysis of annual mean tide level from 1956 to 2009 in Yangtze River estuary. Tianshenggang, Hupuzha(Zhaxia) and Wusong station were taken as case study. M-K test showed that there was an obvious rising tendency for the annual mean tide level at each station. MexHat wavelet function was utilized for the cycle analysis of annual mean tide level series, which showed that there were primary cycles of 17a, 16a and 16a in Tianshenggang, Hupuzha(Zhaxia) and Wusong station respectively. According to the tide level cycle, the moving average series of annual mean tide level at Tianshenggang, Hupuzha(Zhaxia) and Wusong station were calculated, and the tendency items were extracted to quantify the variation tendency of annual mean tide level series respectively. Furthermore, consistency correction was carried out on annual mean tide level series. The present research provided theoretical basis for the sustainable development of water resources in Yangtze River Estuary.

    Direct Solution to the Critical Depth of I-Type Horseshoe Cross-Section with Flat-Bottom

    I-type horseshoe cross-section with flat-bottom is simplified from standard I-type horseshoe cross-section. since the shape and size are easy to control,#em/em# is composed of a flat-bottom and three arc sections. It is commonly applied in hydroelectric engineering. But the critical water depth computation formula is a transcendental equation and has no analytic solution. Mathematics transformation for the critical flow equation was carried out, and the relationship between the dimensionless critical water depth and the relative dimensionless parameters was analyzed. Furthermore, an approximate formula for the calculation of critical water depth for I-type horseshoe cross-section with flat-bottom tunnel was obtained according to the fitting principle. This method overcomes the defects of other iterative trial calculating methods, such as calculation step, dependence on special charts and curves, and serious error. The formula is simple and the maximum error is less than 0.4% under the general engineering design condition (0<h/r≤1.447 1,h/r is the ratio of critical depth to the radius of arch roof). It can be used for engineering design practice and for the compilation of hydraulic structure design handbooks.

    The method of symmetric successive over relaxation-preconditioned conjugate gradient (SSOR-PCG) is a very effective iterative method for solving large scale sparse symmetric positive-definite linear set of equations. The difficulty in the parallelization of the SSOR-PCG lies in solving two triangular equation systems in each iteration. In this research,an improved SSOR-PCG is applied to parallel solve finite element equations,and the multicolor ordering technique is used to increase the degree of parallelism. A MPI-based parallel program is coded and choice is made for efficient MPI communication routines by tests.

    On the basis of the records of 6 stations in Hubei regional seismic network , we obtained the focal mechanisms of the Ms 4.1 and Ms3.2 earthquakes in Zigui on Nov.22,2008 and Sep.27,2008, respectively with the Cut and Paste(CAP) method. The result shows that earthquakes have strike-slip and strike-slip fault mechanisms and the orientations of maximum compressional stresses are mainly in NE. It is certainly consistent with the orientation of the regional maximum compressional stresses .We deduce the earthquake is the reservoir induced earthquake by water permeation and dynamic changes load.The comparison shows that the focus mechanism of two events presented in this paper is consistent with that of small  moderate earthquakes determined by P-wave first-motion.
